Was there a specific code that lead you to think it was the purge valve? I ask because there are several different things that can set an EVAP code. A loose gas cap and cause it or an engine vacuum leak in the system.
I wouldn't assume the purge valve is the issue unless you have a specific diagnostic code. This can be retrieved using a scan tool. Here is a link showing how it's done:

Now, the idea that you were hit in the rear of the vehicle can be something to check. The evap canister vent valve is in the rear of the vehicle. Keep in mind, it may be a vacuum hose that is damaged or disconnected, so make sure to check that first. (See pic below)
