P0440 - Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction
P0442 - Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak)
P0456 - EVAP Leak Monitor Small Leak Detected
No. These codes refer to the evaporative emissions system. That includes the gas tank, the vacuum lines running to the charcoal canister, the canister itself, and the purge valve that opens to draw fumes out of the canister so they can be burned in the engine.
The common cause everyone is familiar with is the loose gas cap, but that usually sets a different fault code for a "gross leak". For small leaks, we start with a visual inspection looking for dry-rotted hoses, rusted hose clamps, and things like that. Since these small leaks can be almost impossible to find, there is a smoke machine that is used to inject a white, non-toxic smoke into the system, then we watch for where it sneaks out.
You might be able to borrow a smoke machine from an auto parts store that rents or borrows tools. Most of them make you buy the tool, then you get a full refund when you take it back. If you choose to keep a tool, you still return it, then they give you or order you a new one.
