Honestly, just about anything can be checked using a scanner. However, not all scanners can read all types of codes. For example, the basic scanners are good for engine/power-train codes. Components such as the ABS, AC and so on require a much better tool.

Now I realize most people don't own a scanner. However, often times a parts store will scan it for free or lend/rent a scanner to you.
I truly feel this is where we need to start. It could be something as simple as a low voltage issue resulting from a weak battery, loose or corroded connection on the battery, or even a weak ground.
If you could have it scanned, let me know the codes which are retrieved. Also, if you could tell me the specific system error messages you are getting, it may point me in the right directions.
