i replaced the temperature sensor and switch and now the temperature gauge says the engine temp is very hot. but the engine is cool enough to hold my hand on it. and the coolant hose is the same way. i am wondering what would cause the gauge to read so high?

Unplug the gauge's sensor. The gauge should then read "cold". If it does, it's the wrong sensor. If it still reads "hot", the wire is grounded somewhere.
