My dealer recently told us that both driveshafts on our van were leaking grease and needed to be replaced. They said the boot had a leak. Can the boot be repaired separately? How do we know whether or not the entire shaft needs to be replaced?

Good morning,

If the boot was compromised, then the bearing was exposed and becomes damaged.

It makes perfect sense to replace the entire axle instead of you having an issue shortly down the road if you do just the boot.

As far as the parts, the dealer will kill you with cost on new axles. I would remove the car and take it to a private shop for this repair. Axles today are cheap. They can be as low as $99.00 a side. The labor is 1 hour aside as well. You could have both replaced for the cost of one at a dealer.
