My car began a horrible screech and grind under the car. After having it towed in to dealer, I was told the axle was bad and needed replaced. I was told this would be $460.00 for all. I found this to be high but needed it fixed. The next day I was told after they replaced axle, that it was not the problem (but that it was still bad) and I needed a new driveshaft, and this would be $900.00 alone just for this and another couple hundred (only) to put on since they had it apart.

Everyone I have talked to has told me I should pay not even close to that much for a driveshaft for car and that also the axle was likely misdiagnosed.

Hello,

If the noise was exactly the same then yes they missed it. If the sound is coming from directly under the car then I would say it is a driveshaft carrier bearing which is more common. Here are diagrams to help you see what you are in for when doing the repair.

Also, if you could shoot a quick video of the noise with your phone and upload it in your reply I can know for sure.

Check out the diagrams (below).

Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

Cheers, Ken
