Had to replace the drive unit for a brand new eight days old car, Volt-2017. How serious is the issue? How concern should I be? Should I return for a refund as it is a 'lemon'? Please advice. Thanks

I am not sure what part you are referring to, but all cars come with a warranty. That is to cover things that do not work as designed. If new parts never broke, there would be no need for warranties. You should be happy if a defective part was replaced. It is extremely rare for any car to never need at least one repair under warranty. It is unrealistic to return a car for a single repair.

In the U.S, lemon laws vary in each state, but typically the car needs to be repaired for the same problem three or more times within the warranty period, or it needs to be stuck in the repair shop for a certain number of days. You never make out in a lemon law case. Most people think they will get all of their money back, but that is usually not true. They will deduct an amount equivalent to if you had rented the car for the number of days or miles you drove it. They might also deduct for things like cleaning, or other fees.
