Sounds like the actuator/motor is either stuck or more likely one of the mechanisms/rods inside the door have become disconnected. Which means when you operate the lock it does not actually move lock mechanism to release the lock. Unfortunately, I don't think there is any way to figure this one out without removing the panel and seeing what is going on inside the door.
I have attached the procedure for removing the panel. Also, I copied a link to one of our documents that gives good detail on how to address door lock issues. Clearly the vehicle illustrated is different but the steps are pretty generic so you will be able follow along on your vehicle.
