1994 Dodge Van hood latch is broken

Help my hood won't open! The latch is broken, my mechanicaly inclined friend took the grill off to try to get it open so we can fix if but nothin doing, it won't open. Do we have to thke the dog box to get it open? None of the repair manuals show a durn thing. the pictures are small and useless.

pull up on the hood while someone trys to disengage latch with a flat blade tool (screwdriver). If that does not work, grab a vice grip or pliers and pull on the cable behind the latch.
