Hello,

An engine can overheat for few different reasons.
First of all, it could overheat due to a bad water pump, if the water pump is not circulating the coolant properly it can overheat. Of course, it can overheat due to a stuck closed thermostat. Also, if the cooling fans are not working the engine can overheat as well. It can overheat due to a bad radiator or having a contaminated or clogged coolant system.

Here is a helpful article:

Check to see if the cooling fans are coming on. Inoperative cooling fans can be due to a bad fan relay, wiring issue or a bad fan motor. First check the relay it is located under the hood in the fuse box (see diagram). Check for corrosion and burnt pin(s).

The relay can also be tested.

I have attached diagrams for your reference.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you.
