While driving the car shifting into 5th gear remains with non-contact. (like the car is in neutral). The shifter remains in the 5th gear position. All other gears work properly. Rumor has it that i can remove the rear trans cover and should see a bolt loose, which, if tightned properly. would re-engage 5th gear. Does that particular senerio apply to my situation?

Yes common problem remove cover to expose 5th . See locknut on end of shaft it has come loose. New nut is best but you can tighten and stake it to shaft.
Other possibility is set screw on shift fork is out.
