2002 Dodge Ram V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic

I have a 2002 dodge ram 1500. It is 4X4 with the floor manual shift. Currently when I have it in two wheel drive, when I get up to 5mph a gringing starts to occur. When I shift to 4wd high, the grinding stop but the truck feels like it is still in two wheel drive. Also I can not get it into neutral and 4wd low on that manual shift. What is going on?

Sounds to me like the shifter is not fulley disengaging and engaging the transfercase in the proper gears could also be a cracked snap ring.

I woudl take and see that the shift lever is properly going through the motion, happened to me before. Put it in 4wheel to much and it pushed the bracket back and wouldnt engage 2wheel.

Thanks for the input. If it is what you say being the snap ring, is that in the transfer case or out

Hey this happened to my 2002 4x4 quad cab when my wife took our daughter and best friend somewhere and were all 3 sitting in the front seats and she used the center console/jump seat and she hit the manual 4 wheel drive shifter and had messed up the linkage, so I just had to make a small adjustment to the linkage to fix the problem and it is easy to see where the linkage was originally and where it slipped to. Take a look and see if that is the problem it just sounds like your linkage needs to be adjusted
