Strange Noise from car under floor

1998 Dodge Intrepid ES, 3.2 L V6, 101610 miles. I brought the car in for a problem with the steering and it was corrected by replacing the front tie rod ends. But now I get a loud noise from underneath the car. The dealer has looked at the car for a week and can find nothing but a clamp missing on an exhaust pipe near the catalytic converter. He dos not think this is causing the problem but cannot find any other cause. The pipe he mentions has a welded clamp on it and he says it is attached to the converter. Do you think this could be the problem? When the noise is bad, I can feel a thumbing on the floor of the car by the gas pedal.

If the noise wasn't there previously, I would wonder about the tie rods. My guess is they are the inner, where a bushing kit is used to repair them. We have had them loosen up from technician error, but don't know if that's your case.

I brought the car back and the dealer had it for a week and no luck. They even undid the repair and put it back together. They are at a loss for the noise. It appears to come from the bottom of the car and only starts after the car has been driven several miles. Even if parked and then driven it is there.

My advice would be to take it to an independent shop. Talk to the owner if possible and ask if he were to use it as his personal car since the nosie didn't show up. However first ask him to diagnose the noise of the thumping. At the end of the day, if they can't re-create the problem then suggest the above scenario. Sometimes telling the "tie rods" or whatever was replaced can help to zero in on a problem, or also just throw smoke and mis-direct a tech.
