I am pretty good at fixing my car. Just replaced evaporator core inside dash. Lots of fun. The steering wheel is supposed to return to center after a turn, but every time you turn by the time you complete the turn and your traveling forward the steering wheel is upside down, or sideways or which ever way it wants. There is also a kind of click that you can feel in the steering column almost every time this happens. The last few days it seems to be getting worse, while turning the car tries to go the opposite way. Example: if your making a hard left turn the wheel seems to try and pull the car to the right. To compensate you have to turn wheel even harder to left to stay in lane. I have a Haynes manual. But very hard to pinpoint which problem it is

It sounds like you have an issue with either the tie rod bushings or the rack and pinion mounting bushings on your car. The click you are hearing is most likely the sound of whichever is bad moving. Easiest way to test is to have a friend turn wheel while you watch the rack. You should be able to determine your problem from this simple visual check.
