I have a '98 dodge intrepid that I basically just tore down to the block and put back together. Replaced the head gaskets and water pump but, was strapped for cash so I didn't replace the timing chain. The timing chain didn't have the light colored links like it was suppsed to so, I got the timing marks on the crank and cam sprocktes as close as I could judging from the book. When I put everything back together, I reiceved spark so I figured the timing is pretty close. But when I try to start it, I have to hold the pedal to the floor for it to fire up. When it fires up and is running, it sounds like it is missing out and like its pushing air out through the breather. Could I have the cam timing off from the secondary chain? Or, is there a sensor that could be causing this? Maybe a bad coil pack or something? Can u please help me out?

Hi:
It sounds like you got the timing chain close, but it may be off a tooth. There is a crank and cam sensor that tell the PCM when to send spark to the cylenders. If the timing is off, there is no telling when the spark is getting to iits destination causing it to miss, fire at the wrong time possibly causing exhaust or compressed air to come back through the intake / breather. The only thing I can recommend is to recheck the timing. Check our "Popular Site Links" section on this page and go to "Timing Belt Marks" and "Drive Belt Roting Diagrams" and check if there is something different from what your book shows.

Let me know what you find. Keep it in mind, if you got the timing chain on that engine with out knowing for sure where the marks were and it runs, you did a hell of a job. My hat is off to ya.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Joe
