The "Check Engine" light is telling you there's a problem and the engine computer knows what it is. Take it to AutoZone or a shop. They will retrieve the fault code(s) and tell you what the computer found.
If the Check Engine light goes off while you're driving, the problem is not occurring right now and it's relatively not serious. If the light stays on, it's more serious. If the light flashes on and off at a steady rate, stop the engine as that's the signal too much fuel is being dumped into the engine, and the catalytic converter is going to overheat and be destroyed.
