I am generally mechanically inclined and am a very methodical problem solver. I have loved cars since I knew what they were. Computers are all well and good inside a car but I wanted to know what is the best avenue for me to take if I want to seriously start learning how to work on a car? Things like breaks, and shocks, exhaust systems, body work, etc all the mechanical things.

Honestly:
You should be taught by someone. However, If you want to do it yourself, that can be done as long as you have repair manuals to follow. The items you listed to learn about can be done on any vehicle.

Let me know if you have other questions.
Joe

PS:
Take a look at mitchel online which is an online manual available from this site. It walkes you through all the steps for checking everything

I agree that the best method is to be taught by someone the problem is that I already have a full time job and do not want to be going to an auto school on top of it. I want this to be a life long hobby so I am sure I will make mistakes and have victories. I'd like to be able to work on everything from the lifted 4x4 to the factory five MKII kits. So is making a mechanic friend my only option?

No, I wouldn't say that is the only option. If you are mechanically inclined, a good repair manual and the right tools should get you through most jobs. Sometimes it is just easier to see it done first and then do it yourself. Hay, I plan to be here a long time, so if you have questions, let me know. I'll be glad to help. Plus, someday when I can retire, my plans are to do rebuilds as a hobby. Like you, there is something that makes me love to make them run.

Let me know if you have other questions. I'll do my best to help.

Joe
