Engine light stays on says to check engine why?

The check engine light comes on when the vehicle's computer has stored trouble code(s). These codes help identify what the culprit is. You should ask a local auto part store to scan your vehicle's engine light codes. Most do this for free. Post code(s) you get here and I will follow up.
