This is a self-diagnostic system. Its purpose is to detect a leak in the EVAP system (Evaporator emissions control system). The pump pressurizes the EVAP system by running the pump. The PCM detects a leak if the pump continues to run, unable to pressurize the system.
Always check the hoses first. A disconnected damaged or missing vacuum hose is the most likely cause always refer to your Vacuum routing hose Diagram attached to your Radiator Support to see if the hoses are hooked right. The leak detection pump has a hose coming off the carbon canister and engine vacuum line. It also has wires plugged into from the PCM. One more thing to check make sure your gas cap isn't missing. Any of these can cause the pump not to build the required psi.
SO check the cap and hoses before you replace the pump.
