I have a whine noise coming from the engine of my grand caravan. It goes up and down with the speed of the engine. Does not seem to change when steering right or left. Very noticable at idle and up to around 30 mph, after that it is less noticable, but I think the common road noise takes over. I'm thinking it may be power steering or alternator, maybe just the belt. Can you give me some suggestions to narrow it down before I start replacing things.
Thanks,
Mark

You can listen closely to the power steering pump and the other belt driven components with a mechanical stethoscope (or use a long wooden broom handle). Simply place one end of scope to component and other end to ear. This echoes the sound right into your ear so if the component is whining you WOULD know it then. I have also heard the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve, located near throttle body, make a whining noise.
