1999 Dodge Caravan 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

the heater goes from cold to hot then back to cold, I can't seem to get a steady temperature and sometimes the heat does not turn on when turned on and when this happens the heat Gage says its getting to hot then it turns on and the Gage go back to normal, how do I fix this problem?

Sounds as if you low on coolant
checking coolant level would be my 1st step
and then pressure test the coolant system checking for leaks
