Had an intermittent situation where the speedometer would jump around when hitting bumps and truck would cut out (brake light would come on buzzer would sound) like it stalled then would come back. Hit a bump on a dirt road Sunday and it went completely dead. I have courtesy lights/headlights/horn and nothing else. No response at all on key- no dash lights/radio/etc. Power windows also inoperative. Pretty handy with a meter and have a wiring diagram. Basically looking for a hint as to where to start.

I read somewhere that there's a ground at the rear of the right head that ties to the cluster but I don't feel it. TIA

Hi Powers,

Sounds like you lost your PCM power feed or ground for the PCM. If you lose your PCM then this will keep everything from powering up as you describe. However, the best way to diagnose something like this is to try to replicate hitting the bumps by doing what is called a wiggle test. Basically start at the PCM and have someone sit in the truck with the key on and see when you wiggle the harness that everything flickers or comes back on. You do not want to really manhandle the wiring. Again you want to replicate what the wiring would do when you hit the bumps. They are not going to move much so just wiggle them gently.

You want to go in strategic pattern because when you move the part of the harness that makes it come back on you don't want to be moving so fast that you don't know which place it was. Once you get the system to come back on, it doesn't always go back off if you wiggle it again, so you may only get one shot at it. If you are moving to fast you may not know where the issue is.

I attached a ground location for the PCM. Looks like it is on the top left of the engine. This may be the one you are looking for because it is a pretty common ground.

Let me know what you find and we can go from there.

Hey, thanks for the reply! I've been picking at it for a couple of days off and on and found it yesterday afternoon. The harness wasn't clipped into the hole at the driver's rear of the motor and a wire burned partially on the manifold causing a short which blew a fusible link at the firewall connector. Of course, nobody local has the link wire, so have it coming and Tuesday will be all set. Thanks again!

Thank for the reply. That makes sense. Unfortunate thing is doing the wiggle test wouldn’t have helped you because you lost power permanently. Glad you found it. Thanks for using us as a resource.
