Different engines and makers lay out their engines in different ways. Normally cylinder number one will be the cylinder farthest to the front of the engine.
In the case of your engine the "backwards" would be as compared to other makes. Cylinder one on that engine is the first cylinder on the passenger side. Then behind it are 3 and 5 The driver's side then becomes 2-4-6.
Now if you take that same engine and turn it sideways like in a front wheel drive. The numbers stay the same, so in that case 135 would be the side of the engine facing the firewall and 246 would be the bank facing the radiator.
