Had an oil change tires rotated they let me know I needed front brakes. The car is making a noise when driving. No noise when in neutral. I drive for Uber and a rider that works on race cars told me it is the CV joint on the right side. O'Rileys said it could be the bearings. The oil change place said it could be the brakes. I cannot afford to get the work done at a shop, but a man friend is great at mechanics. My question is, what is possibly causing the noise? Upon taking off and releasing the clutch there is a weird like sucking noise and the other noise is like a whining noise when driving kind of rattling.

Hello,

It does sounds like the CV axle bearing is bad but to be sure can you take a quick video of the noise with your phone and upload it here in your response?

Here is what you are in fo when doing the CV axle bearing this is for the rear but the front is basically the same:

Please run down this guide and report back.

Cheers, Ken

I went in to Maaco today a service man took it for a twenty minute ride then put his stethoscope on the transmission and said the bearings are bad. They did not remove a tire or check the CV joints. My car is a manual and there is no problem shifting. The noise reminds me of a car that is old and has not had a oil change in years. There is no clicking noise when turning. Now I do not know if I should get another opinion. Is this repairable if that is what is wrong or do I have to replace the transmission?

It can be the final drive of the transmission which will give no operational error just noise until the bearing fails completely then the transmission will lock up. A second opinion is always a good idea but it sounds like you will need to replace the transmission. Here are diagrams to show you how.

You will need to remove the cv axles to start.

Check out the diagrams on how to remove the transmission (below). Please let us know what happens.

I have located a transmission with only 53,000 miles on it for $375.00 but what if I buy it then pay to have it put in and it is not that? There is no slippage no lugging when shifting or driving only that rattling noise when driving. While the clutch is depressed or car is in neutral no noise. However when releasing clutch and taking off in first gear there is a sucking squeaking noise from the clutch. Someone mentioned bearings in the clutch assembly, I have just recently had the throttle assembly replaced. I am on a budget so cannot afford buying a transmission then finding out it is something else. I need this car to do my job which requires travelling hundred's of miles and also I Uber so I have to be able to rely on my car. Being a woman I really do not want a man mechanic to think I am stupid and can be taken advantage of. One last question if I do have to replace the transmission is there a computer that requires replacing so my odometer etc works? Your advice is much appreciated.

I hear ya. To safeguard against having to rely on someone's opinion take it to a different shop for diagnosis. Replacing this is not easy nor cheap. If the final drive carrier bearing are out you will notice nothing out of the ordinary except the noise. If the CV bearing have been confirmed good it only leaves the final drive carrier bearing. I wish I could hear the noise in a video then I can tell for sure. If you take one upload it here in your response we have the capabilities.

Please let us know what happens.

Cheers, Ken

Hello, I got my transmission on July 9th had a shop put it in and picked up the car on July 13th all was good. Drove the car around five hundred miles over the weekend and was in Fresno ubering weekend on Saturday night was on way to pick up a rider when all of a sudden every warning light came on the ABS the fuel tank saying was low on gas which I was not. I had just filled up. The tire pressure light and another one saying tire pressure sensor was off. It does not show how many miles to empty mileage on car nothing just all those warning signals. This leads me to believe the computer is not programmed to the new transmission. So do I need to buy another computer can it be programmed the existing computer to the new transmission? Is my car going to shut down if I continue to drive it? I have jobs to do out of town for next two weeks and I also uber after work. Please advise me on what to do and if I can continue to drive the car without fear of it shutting down. Thank you

Yes, it could be the transmission needs to be initialized or they have a loose or corroded electrical connector. Can you read the codes to see what comes up it will point us to the sensor or wiring that is giving us the issue?
