I was driving and the car just shut off and tried turning on cranks but won’t start.

Hi,

What you described sounds like a failed crankshaft position sensor. By chance, do you have a live data scan tool? If you do, check to see if there is an RPM signal when the engine is cranking. If you don't have one, see if the tachometer moves a little when cranking. If there is no signal or the tachometer doesn't move, my first suspect would be the aforementioned sensor.

Take a look at this link and let me know if it mirrors what you have experienced:

Let me know.

Hi,

The sensor has nothing to do with the starter motor turning the engine. Is that your concern? If the starter is working properly, were you able to check for an RPM signal or if the tachometer is moving when cranking the engine?

Let me know.

Just heard from mechanic, it’s not the crank position sensor.

Hi,

Wow, that's a change. When you would crank the engine, did it sound odd? For example, did it crank faster than normal?

Also, did he say no compression or low compression? If it is low between cylinders beside each other, that could be a head gasket issue.

Let me know.

Hi,

The engine has a lot of miles on it, but I wouldn't expect "no" compression. Due to wear, it may be lower than needed.

At this point, the only thing I can say is it doesn't make sense to me. Nearly all Honda engines are called interference engines. So, if the timing was off due to a belt/chain, that may have bent valves in a couple of cylinders leading to "no" compression. Other than that, there should be some.

Is there any way you could get the vehicle and check compression? Here is a link that explains how it's done. It's actually easy to do. You will need a compression gauge, but most parts stores will lend one to you.

Let me know.

Hi,

Did you have it towed to the shop or to your home? Also, at that mileage, the timing shouldn't have been a problem.

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Take care,

Joe

I don't know if I should invest in a motor, or a head or might be the head gasket.

Hi,

If you feel comfortable doing the compression test, it will help guide us. If there is no compression, you are better off getting a good used engine. If it is low, that is a different story and could be a gasket issue.

Let me know. I'll help you either way.

Hi,

That would make more sense. If you have the vehicle and want to check it, let me know the results. If I can help, I will.

Take care and let me know if you have other questions.

Take care,

To determine that, I need to know the compression readings. There are ways to determine if it is a worn engine or head gasket.

When you test compression and find it low, you can add about a tablespoon of motor oil into the cylinder and retest. If the compression increases, then we know the rings are worn. If there is no change, then it is either a gasket or valve-related issue.

Let me know.

If you have a chance, let me know if you are comfortable performing the test. I'm interested in knowing what is going on with this.

Take care,
