Finished doing a valve cover gasket job drove it to get some gas and all of a sudden, the temperature gauge jumped from where it should be around 80-100c to a full gauge and a red message appeared stating coolant off, turn engine off. I don't see any leaks. I washed the motor before I drove it and spent 30 minutes cleaning the inside while the car was running. First time to see it do that. Scanned it and temperature was 248f for ECT. Upper and lower radiator hoses are not so tight and normal heat. Once you turn the car off and on again the temperature gauge goes to middle again but scanner shows 230f or so and climbs to around 245. Also, once car reaches optimum temperature fan stays on high, even while driving. Checked sensor under the reservoir and it's okay. The reservation also feels cool, not as hot as it should be. If I rev up the motor scanner, it shows temperature goes to 250f. Gauge climbing slowly to above where it should be, 120c or so.

Also, once I turned it off, I felt an upper hose and I can feel the water booing inside it but it's not very hard, normal. Opened reservoir cap and it was boiling and shot water off, then I closed it.

Also checked the A/C and it's running, checked relay under the hood for the fan and it may have not been clicked all the way in, switched it with another one and started car, fan was off then after few minutes started it speeds up slowly. Coolant temperature on scanner 245 now and 100 and some on dash (in Celsius). But now as soon as I turn the car off the fan cuts off, it used to run for 30 seconds more before. I still think this is too hot for it as the range should be between 195-212. Not sure if the coolant sensor is faulty and just reads all over the place.

This sounds more like a sensor issue. Engine coolant does not jump straight to hot. If you think about it, the temperature of the engine and the coolant rises gradually so the fact that it jumps and then it goes back to normal after you cycle the key points to a sensor issue.

So, I would suggest we start with checking the operation of the sensor. We do this by checking the resistance in a pot of water. Basically, pull the sensor and put the tip in water with a thermometer so you know the temperature of the water. Then measure the resistance.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-use-a-voltmeter

Bring the water to 20 C if you use cold water or 80 C (68 or 176 F) so that you can compare the resistance and voltage signal. You need to be within 5%.

Let us know what you find with this.

Makes sense. Some people replaced it and got good results others had to replace the one up front underneath the coolant hose, which is part of the thermostat housing, not sure what difference is between the two. Can you get me the part number for the one in the back of the motor?

Looks like one is for the ECM to use and the other is for the gauge. So that begs the question, which one were you monitoring with the scan tool?

Basically, the testing remains the same.

AllData says this is the part number for the sensor for the ECM but does not tell me which one this is.

Scan tool said etc. And it was climbing while gauge was climbing, that's why fan was on high.

Got it. There is a chance that you have two issues. You could have an overheating issue and a gauge issue.

However, if the gauge seems to work at times, then that would point to an intermitted sensor issue.

No matter what, I would test the sensors and then replace and reevaluate to just make sure before you go to any major trouble.

I am remembering to trust your instinct though. :)

I got a replacement. I see where it is. Doesn't have any screws or way to install it or remove it. Any instructions on how it comes out?

Never mind I found it. That was a pain, no room at all. Temperature on gauge so far okay around 95c on scanner 225f or so and fan kicks in gradually around that range. At 230 fan became faster.

Fan still on high but hoses are normal. Temperature 242f and gauge climbing. Did you say the other switch is on the front by the thermostat?

I have not seen this type of operation, but I know that when they stick, they cause all sorts of odd issues so that is possible. I don't see any reason to point you in a different direction.

Lol. Never heard that expression before. Thanks. I do read a lot and have some experience, just not enough, also a bit of common sense, which you definitely need in this type of business.
