That's the last thing I'd suspect. First look at the two half shafts. If an inner CV joint broke, the housing will spin freely and no energy will go to the other side. I had an outer CV joint fall apart after 400,000 miles on my '88 Grand Caravan. I pulled into my driveway the night before, like normal, and the next morning it didn't move even an inch. The last marble was laying on the ground, but the funny part was although the half shaft was spinning, it didn't make any noise. 65 bucks for a brand new half shaft and it was back on the road in an hour.
Clutch discs give you a lot of warning in the form of slipping under hard acceleration long before they fail completely. It's always possible something flew apart, but that would be very unusual. Let me know what you find with the half shafts. Look for a badly twisted and torn boot, and grease sprayed in the area.
