When I turn the key to the run position there's a clicking noise. Starter works fine. It has a mechanical fuel pump. Trying to figure out what the clicking noise is.

Hi,

Wow, I haven't seen one of these for a long time. You are testing my memory. If I recall, there is an electronic choke pull-off solenoid on this year/model.

I attached a pic I found and circled where the choke pull-off would connect. Locate that on your vehicle and unplug it. Then, turn the key on and off to see if the sound is gone.

Let me know what you find. Also, if there isn't one on your vehicle, let me know that as well.

Take care,

Joe

I unplugged the orange wire and the clicking noise stopped. Wondering what that part is?
Thank you for your help!

Hi,

Wow, it has been a long time. I believe that is an idle speed stop solenoid. I am going to ask the site owner to confirm. I can't even find pics in the manuals for that one.

Take care and Happy New Year.

Joe,

Thank you and I will watch for your reply. In case you are wondering, the motor is in a 1929 Mercedes Benz Gazelle SSK kit car that's been in storage for 30 years. Pic attached.
Happy New Year!

Hi,

Wow, that's beautiful! According to my contact, you are hearing a fuel/air mixture solenoid. I'm not even sure where you could get one. I found one on eBay, but it's for a 1980. See pic below.

Let me know if that helps. It does appear to be the correct part.

Take care,

Joe

Thanks, the part looks correct and going to order. Do you know where the engine serial number plate is? I can't find where it is on a 4 cylinder. I found the casting number but no serial number plate and googled where to find it, but no luck.

Hi,

The only thing I have is based on the VIN. There was an engine code E and Code J. We don't have the original vehicle to even get that.

You know, I really think the engine you have in the vehicle is from a 1980, or at least the carb did. Is the carb you have a single or 2BBL carb? In 1978, they used a single barrel. The one you have has the air-fuel mixture solenoid which came on the 2BBL in 1980.

Let me know how things turn out.

Take care,

Joe
