Clanging, metallic noise that goes away

First time I heard I was coming to a stop.
Sounded awful, like steel on steel and perhaps steel being dragged along the road or something. Bunch of different sounds all twisted together. Thought it was someone else's car, as it was gone after I kept driving. Couple days later, heard some more awful sounds while backing up. Drove forward and they disappeared. Couple days later, while driving at road speed (seventy km/h or so) heard some more awful steel on steel sounds, though not as bad as first time. They lasted a bit longer this time, maybe a minute of driving before I pulled over. They disappeared again. This is a car I bought used recently. I know the bushings and struts need replacing, but would they be causing this other noise, as opposed to the clunking noise I hear when driving over bumpy roads on a cold day.

Have also taken tires off and looked at all components. Nothing loose and plenty of brake pad. Engine drives fine except for that whine when accelerating which I am told is normal for Honda. Shifts gears fine. Was told clutch was replaced not too long ago. Could transmission be going. Teeth grinding? Why does the sound come and go for no specific reason as yet?

Hey COUP,

This sounds like it is a axle bearing that is going out, here is a guide that will help you see if this is the problem.

Thank you. It's been almost a week and the sounds have not come back so far. Just those three times. I imagine the bearings need replacing regardless so will get stuff in order to do them myself at a local garage I have available to me. I don't imagine it's urgent at this point (?) If I am not hearing them at the moment and have a couple weeks to get parts and arrange for time in the garage. Please let me know if you think otherwise.

Hey COUP,

It is good that the noise is not happening but I would lift the front end you grab each wheel to see if they are loose in the axle bearing to make sure you are not in danger.

Thanks. They weren't loose. Still wondering what it is. Very sporadic and never lasts long.

The sounds are so sporadic and disappear so quickly I have not been able to make a video. They occur hardly ever now that the weather has warmed up.

It is difficult for us to know with hearing the sound. I would check the brake pads inner and outer to see if one is worn down.

Please let us know what happens.
