Your instrument cluster is no longer a simple, reliable set of gauges and lights; it's a complicated computer. If the transmission is shifting properly, the sensors and transmission computer are working so most likely the problem is in the instrument cluster itself. All data is relayed to it on two wires called the "Data Buss". A problem involving the data buss would affect everything in the cluster, however, some data is transmitted through the Body computer and processed to update the information sent to the overhead Traveler computer. Although rare, the Body computer can cause symptoms affecting the instrument cluster.
If you have the overhead Traveler computer, check if the "Miles Per Gallon" or "Distance to Empty" readings are updating while you drive. If they are, the speed information is on the data buss and is not being display by the instrument cluster. This information will help your mechanic reach a faster diagnosis.
(I drive a 1988 Grand Caravan specifically to avoid all these unnecessary computers).
