How do I repair a P1491 code on this vehicle? Then, how do I get the check engine light to go off?

Hi There, and thanks for your help. I have a 1998 Chrysler Town & Country (mini-Van long, 3.8 liter engine, I think is how it is listed?). It did not pass the standard Vehicle Emissions Inspection here in the state of Illinois. The error code from the computer Diagnostic Trouble Codes is reported as "P1491". I was looking for the description of this error code and maybe some details as to how to research this issue to repair the problem so I may insure long term error free driving. Thank you very much for all your help. Jerry 773-892-8692

Jerry,

The P1491 code is not related to any emissions control systems.
It is a trouble code for the radiator fan control relay circuit.
Maybe there are some other codes stored in your computer.
If you are having any overheating issues especially at idle or stop and go driving I would check to make sure you have power to the radiator fan relay by testing the plug that goes to it. When the engine is at operating temperature insert a test light into the plug going to the relay to see if you have power there. If you do the problem is more than likely a bad relay. Leave the light there for a little bit though as the power will not be sent there if the engine isn't hot enough yet. This relay is located on the drivers side underneath the van. You will see the wires going to the fan.
