Hi Bret:
If the transmission will not shift out of first, it could be a few things. It could be an internal problem or a computer problem. First, I suggest that you take the vehicle to have the PCM scanned. If there is a code, it will tell you what is wrong. If there are no codes, take it to a transmission shop for inspection.
