my car has lost power, sputters and jerks. and sounds like angry lawn mower. is this the catalytic converter?

It could be the converter. Does the exhaust seem to be normal or does it seem blocked? Also, at night time, after you drive the car, check to see if the converter is glowing red hot. IF it is, it's plugged.
