Engine Performance problem
2002 Chrysler Concorde 6 cyl Automatic 75,000 miles

My car engine was making a struggling type sound for the past couple of weeks especially at over 30 mph. Then the engine light came on. I changed the oil but the light is still on. The car turns over ok and I can still drive it but power of the engine is not the same. The car doesn't turn off when I drive it but I make sure not to go over 25 to 30 mph and I use it only to move it or put gas in it. The transmission seems to be Ok.

The "check engine" light is an indicator for a system that monitors many electronic functions in the system, also called the "malfunction indicator lamp" (MIL). It can come on for any of hundreds of different causes from any of the systems that the computer monitors. Some are very important and can lead to further component or engine damage and some are emissions related not as serious but still a problem and need to be repaired.

Your first step is to have the computer scanned to retrieve the trouble codes that were set when the check engine light came on. Those codes will give you specific information about what the computer saw and will get you pointed in the right direction to find your problem. With a 1996 or newer and some 95 cars and you have an AutoZone or Advanced auto parts in your area, they will read them for free. Once you have these code numbers, we can be a lot more specific about what your problem may be.

Thank you for your speedy reply. Doesn't the loss of engine power that I mentioned help to narrow this down a little? I understand what you're saying in regards to the function of the engine light but the auto zone store is not that close to me and I don't want to take a chance of driving there and possibly damage the engine. The next time I use the car I want it to be to take it to the mechanic. I need to get a ballpark figure as to the cost of repairs before I take it in. I don't want to be hit with a price that I can't handle. Maybe you can give me a guess or two?

How can anyone possibly guess at the cost to fix something if you have no clue what kind of problem you have? You can't know anything until the codes are read.
