If you feel this while braking AND while accelerating, start by inspecting the tires for a broken belt. If one is bad enough, you should also see the steering wheel wobble back and forth at low speeds. A tire shop is the best place to take it for this problem. It's common for wires from the steel belts to stick out where the belt is broken. They can really smart if you catch one while running your hand over the tire tread.
