I don't believe that it is your alternator. Bad alternator does not send signal for your check engine light to come on. If the battery light in the gauge cluster is not on, your alternator is OK.
You can go to any auto parts store (Autozone, Checkers, Kragen, Advance, whichever in your area), they can test your alternator for free. Or you can do this yourself. You have to have a voltmeter, though. With the engine running, touch the test probes to your battery. If it is showing more than 13 but less than 15.9 volts, your alternator is good.
