Engine Performance problem
1991 Chrysler 5th Avenue 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 75'000 miles

I have a 91 crysler new yorker 5th ave. In real good shape. 79,000+ miles. But since I purchased the car. I have been having troubles with back firing going up a hill. Then at times. Getting no gas at all to move. When this happens. The car will only sputter and barely move. Let idle for awhile. Then I will get power again. I have just recently realized I think. That if I go stay over a half tank of gas. This will not happen. I still get an occasional back fire and a flurtter going up a hill. But I do get gas. What is wrong. I have been hearing all kinds of things from sensors to computer to tune up to timing. HELP! Please. Dianna

Hi Dianna:

It sounds like the fuel pump is where I would start. There may be something cloging the screen (hence the 1/2 tank of fuel helps), or the pump itself is going bad. If you decide to remove the fuel tank to check, I would recommend that you replace the pump regardless.

Let me know how it goes for you, or if you have any other questions.

Joe
