1995 4 wheel drive Chevrolet automatic transmission. For a while, the shift indicator in the dash would disappear. When this happened, the speedometer and the tachometer would quit working. If the shift indicator light came on, everything would work fine. Additionally, if the shift indicator did not show up, the transmission starts out in a higher gear and does not shift properly. This was intermittent for a while, but now seems permanent. I can shift the transmission manually. Yesterday, I hit a bump or something and everything suddenly worked fine. However, when I turned off the ignition and restarted, it quit working again. Can't seem to find loose or corroded wires. Where should I be looking?

Hey Mdolash

I am calling the gear range selector switch, these had a big problem going out and would cause the problem you are describing. Here is a wiring diagram to help you see how the system works and the location of the gear range sensor. To confirm the issue use this guide to test through the sensor (neutral safety they used to call it)

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Cheers, Ken
