Yesterday my car gave out on me at a stop light. When I tried to turn the car on to start it, it didnt make any noise what so ever. The gages were all going crazy, the lights, windows still worked but the car would not start. I was told about a month ago that my fan belt was too tight. I have oil in the car and gas. I need to get my oil changed but I dont think my car would have died like that. My service engine light has been on for a couple of months but I was told it was because of my fan belt? Please advise me on what to do before I tow the car to ten different shops to have them run a pretty bill for me to pay.
thank you,

Check both connections on the battery, disconnect the battery and strat of with a fst charge, then change it to a slow sharge. This will bring the battery up slower but the charge is deeper. After you have cleaned the battery teminals replace battery after charging. The vehicle should start as long as there is nothing else wrong with it. Take the car to somwhere like auto zone or advance auto parts and have them check the charging sytem. Some places have goten away from doing this so check around.
What you had described in your post sounded like the altinator was not charging or a bad ground to let the battery charge. Then tension on the belt could hav caused the altinator to fail, but I think the bearings would have started to make a noise first. I might be wrong but check the connections on the battery terminals especially the ground.
