So when I would put in into first to drive it would jerk, then it felt as if it was sticking then jerk forward. It did this until it wouldn't go forward anymore. I had it towed and I was told it needed the Rear Differential replaced. Now I have found that that is not the only term for that part. Rear Axle Assembly or Rear Axle Differential. I would like to know what the correct term is, so when I buy the part it's the right one. Could they have been wrong? I would hope not just making sure. How much should I expect to pay for a used part? I found a used one for around 400 is this good?
Sorry don't know much about this stuff other than changing oil. I just don't want to get screwed.

Actually, either part name will get you the right part. The differential is the center part of the rear axle that has the gears in it to make the tires turn.

If you can get a good one with a warranty for 400, that isn't too bad. Please keep in mind that the one you get has to be the same gear ratio as the original one. If you get a different ratio, it will cause many problems for you because the rear differential will turn faster or slower than the front. If you put it in 4wd, it will fight the front differential. Plus, it will cause the vehile speed sensors to go crazy.

If you have other questions, let me know, and thanks for using 2carpros. Com.
