The rear wheels now intermittently grip and release in both drive and reverse. Most noticeable at low speeds. No rear end work has been done on it previously that we kknow(bought it used 4.5 years ago). We have towed an 8,000 trailer about 10 times and smaller loads about 6 times. Could this be in the differential? A solenoid in the transmission? Anything else?

First make sure all your fluids are full/trans/axle. If you have never added a cooler and have towed a trailer quite a bit it may be the trans is in need of repair. The best thing to do is go to a trans shop and they can scan to see if anything is wrong with solenooids or electrical. If your fluid is brown it may be best to get the fluid changed but it may not help. Have a trans pro look at it and then if it needs repair make sure to add a good trans coolelr to the system even if it has one.
