Your transmission relies on the timing of the engine to be correct - in order to shift and/or work properly.
When ever you remove the distributor and put it back in place, you must check the timing. In order to properly check the timing on your engine, you must use a scan tool capable of setting the timing (like a GM Tech One - these are about $9000.00 or so). Unless you have one of these scanners - or access to one with the proper software - this usually means a trip to the dealer.....The timing on these engines CANNOT BE SET WITH A TIMING LIGHT.. Without confirming and/or setting the timing, you cannot properly diagnosis a transmission problem..
BTW - just dropping the distributer in on the marks you may (or may not) have marked does not mean that the timing will be correct - or close enough.
