When I put the vehicle into 4 wheel drive it makes a roaring sound that does not go away until I go back into 2 wheel drive. This does the same thing in 4 hi or automatic as we drive on ice and snow most all winter.

only in 4 wheel drive when driving or at a stop? if its when your driving, it sounds like the bearings in the front diff are worn. Most likely install new front differental bearings.
