It doesn't sound like that would help. Actually, most places offer a trans flush. They attach a machine to the trans cooling lines and start the engine. As the car runs, the old trans fluid is drained out while all new goes in.
However, that doesn't sound like the problem. WHen first reading your post, I thought it could be a bad shift solenoid, but the fact that it shifts normal after turning it off leads me to think of the trans control module (TCM). Has the check engine light ever come on?
