Speedometer on Monte Carlo stopped working. Is there anything I can check myself before bringing it in for repair?

Actually, the is only one of two things that would cause it. Either the speedo (unlikely) is bad, or the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is bad. Has the check engine light come on?
