1996 Chevy Monte Carlo starter solenoid

A friend of mine an I went shopping and when we got into the car, and I tried to start it it wont even turn over there was no noise coming from the car at all, but all the lights were working, I have no clue what to do. And its only my second day driving it after I bought it

Double check the battery and connections if okay try shorting out the starter solenoid and see if it will crank the engine over-if so check and test the park/neutral switch and ignition switch
