The back red running lights and the yellow front lights stay on after the car has been shut off. Also the interior chimes ring rapidly, as if the keys where left in the ignation, but faster. What could be the problem? This also causes the battery to run down.

Hello -

To better assist you is your model just a Malibu or an LS. Also your engine size in liter.

May sound odd - but please go to Auto Zone (AZ) or O'Reilly's (OR) and for FREE they can pull the codes to the car. Most important: Once they check your codes, if they find something and you don't get it fixed and need to get back with us, please make sure you tell us exactly what the code was, number and all. Example, if the code was E0568 O2 Sensor bad. Then make sure you give us all of that. The reason - it looks like your car can throw a code for the lighting system. So this may give us a clue. Also while there for FREE also they can bring their tester out and check your battery and alternator. You might as well do that since you are there and it's free...

How long has it been doing this?

How did it start - did you have any work done on the car - install a radio or anything? Any minor wrecks etc? Basically can you think of anything that may have caused this to start or you were doing something when it did?

While you are doing this I will start looking over some wiring diagrams.

The car is just a Malibe with a 3.1 liter engine. Auto Zone won't come out to the car and run any test unless the check engine light was on. This problem started last week when I noticed the car was having trouble truning over, as if the battery was low. I just assumed that the battery was going out since it is 6 yrs old. Nott untill I let the car sit for two days that it didn't start and there was no juice in the battery at all. I tried to charge it with a battery charger and notice a clicking, no more of a bussing sound coming from the fuse box under the hood of the car, on the left (drivers side) above the battery. I stopped the charging and bought a new battery, that is when I noticed that the lights came on and stayed on. No work or wrecks before this happen.

Hello -

Just so you know - some cars the light will turn back off again. You can also use the tool check out program and check your own codes. If there is an O'Reilly's I would go there.

When you charged the battery did you have the positive on the positive of the battery and the negative on a metal bracket on the engine?

Please pull the 15A Park LPS fuse and see if the lights go out. What happens?

You may have a bad ALC Park Lamp CTRL, I believe Relay 19. There is also one on spot 20.
