1999 Chevy Lumina car problems

My car doesn't seem to pick up speed and after braking and excelerating the car jerks and the check engine light is on sometimes the engine races and it cuts off while at stop signs or lights, what could this be?

Hi:
There are a couple things that could cause this. However, if the check engine light has been on, you should be able to scan the computer to get a trouble code and identify the problem.

Take the car to a nationally recognized parts store and have them scan it for codes. Most will do it for free and then you won't need to guess what is causing the problem.
