1996 Chevy Lumina air conditioner compressor

How can i tell if the air conditioner compressor is working? When i turn on air it dosent sound like its coming on. Blows out warm air . Tryed to recharge it but didnt seem to work. Thanks

under the air filter housing there is a 2 prong plug
disconnect and with a paper clip with ac on
jump both probes. a/c comperssor should engage
