WHEEN YOU TURN TO THE LEFT IT TURNS FINE BUT WHEN YOU TURN IT TO THE RIGHT IT IS EXTREMELY HARD TO TURN WHAT COULD THIS BE?

It sounds like the rack and pinion is going bad. There are bushings in them that the rack actually slide through when turning. If they go bad, the do exactly what you have described.
